I started this art print shop because I wanted to share some of the images I’d accumulated in my photographic archive that I not only found particularly pleasing, but that I also thought, with the right treatment, could work well as decorative wall art prints.
All the images I’m choosing to make these prints from have something in the subject that draws the viewer in, whether it be beauty, quirkiness, humour, or perhaps a combination of things.
I’m not a photographer, so just presenting my pictures in their original photographic form, albeit with the endless possibilities of retouching, wasn’t really a road I wanted to go down. Instead, I wanted to create art pieces out of them, in the style of a printmaker.
Using my experience of digital artwork creation, gained over many years as a graphic designer, I have developed a particular method of deconstructing a photographic image (or sometimes more than one) and rebuilding the elements into a single piece of vector line artwork. Each finished picture is a calculated balance—areas of bold, solid colour, partnered with shadow and highlight tones that are generated using line screens.
That doesn’t mean it’s a kind of pre-programmed, create-by-numbers affair, however—far from it. There’s a lot of thought, planning and experimentation required, and each subject needs a subtly different treatment to make it work.
The result, though, is a range of pieces that are a combination of the mechanical and the painterly. They also have a kind of ‘family resemblance’ to each other—a signature style, if you like.
Over time, I hope to build up a large and eclectic range of pieces. For now, I hope you enjoy what there is here so far, and if you do, remember you can join my mailing list for occasional email updates on new art print editions as they become available.
